Summerland Beach Cafe- restaurant reviews – March 13, 2011 – time 12:30
With an amazing day ahead of us, we decided to hit the Summerland Beach Cafe. I was craving Eggs Benedict and because we’ve been going to this restaurant for a while, now I knew it was time for a review. We arrived and as usual at this time of day, there was a line-up. As feature picture shows, the restaurant is slightly elevated above street level. So, you need to climb up some stairs to be seated (they do have a side door possibly for the handicapped). They told us it would be a fifteen minute wait. I know, I know, I know, fifteen minutes, thats great! They even gave us this great new technology that let us know when they were ready – a buzzer! So, fifteen minutes went by and we were ready to go. We always seem to get the same bus-boy who greets us and gets the drinks. He’s pretty amazing. Our table was outside – regular picnic table done up a bit. Unfortunately, we didn’t have an umbrella. We asked the hostess to grab us one but she seemed to disappear really quickly. So, we asked the bus-boy and he grabbed it immediately and then got us our drinks immediately too. This guy is on top of his game. The waitress came by for our order as I was taking some quick shots of the restaurant. So, she had to come back. I was going for the eggs benedict but I wanted to test them to see how good the service really was. So, I ordered eggs florentine (not on the menu just substitute spinach for the ham). The food came out within 8 minutes – pretty great timing. My teammate had the Lox and Eggs but substituted the smoked salmon for the Lox – not so salty. Somehow, the waitress grabbed the wrong plate. I mentioned that I had the Eggs Benedict and within seconds she scooped the plate up and was back with the right meal – spinach too. The eggs were perfect the smoked salmon was incredible. The side of potatoes is a bit heavy and makes the meal a bit dry for both meals. The orange juice is divine – freshly squeezed. Overall we had a great experience. So, why only tree stars?
Here’s what we liked:
---
1. The service at the Summerland Beach Cafe is always impeccable. The waitresses look great and they’re really friendly.
2. The orange juice is freshly squeezed and tastes great
3. The atmosphere in all areas of the restaurant is just amazing. The outside front patios offer a great feeling of being in the fresh air. The back patio gives you a feeling of complete privacy like you’re in a hidden world. And, indoors is just like being in a cottage.
4. Location, location, location. It’s located in Summerland.
Things we didn’t love.
---
1. The food. Yes, unfortunately, the food doesn’t always hit the mark. This time the food was great but often the eggs benedict doesn’t quite get there. There usually isn’t enough Hollandaise sauce and the bacon seems to be a bit dry. The eggs too are usually a bit dry. Add that the potatoes are dry and really you’re not eating the best eggs benedict around.
Sadly, that’s enough to lower the great service, the great atmosphere, the great oj and the great location from an easy five stars to a pretty low three stars.
Suggestion
For all meals, increase the amount of fruit and lower the amount of potatoes. For the eggs benedict be more generous with the hollandaise and check the eggs.
